Finger Lake-ing Good

Harry has been insisting he wants to go fishing for ages. We have never fished in England, although we have often had a go on holiday.

His interest in fishing is quite surprising given he has never caught anything - except in Canada where between us (myself & Jim, Matt, Harry & Fin) we did catch over 60 fish in an afternoon. But in that case it was hard not to catch them - in fact the difficulty then was catching the bait.

Still, Bedford is well served with easily accessible fishing on rivers and lakes and so today we decided to give it a try. We had rods & reels brought back from a previous holiday (Crete) and enough bits and pieces to make an attempt.

So, after a brief stop at the local shop to buy UK-compliant non-lead shot, and a half-pint of maggots, we drove down to Priory marina.

There are many fishing spots down there. Arbitrarily, we settled for the "Finger Lakes". Not wishing to spoil the surprise, but I can tell you that we did not come close to catching a fish. We were probably closer to catching a swan - they seemed to be everywhere. Or perhaps a dog - many came to visit us on the bank. Naturally we made several attempts at catching trees.

After a few hours we called it a day, but not before Harry had taken a mini-dip in the lake - inadvertently tipping his chair over the edge and just catching himself with just the one leg totally immersed.

We did catch one thing - a glimpse of a HUGE fish leaping in the middle of the lake just as we left. I expect we will be back.
